Hidden ’Doorstep Taxes’ Add Costs to E-Commerce and Food Delivery Orders
Several U.S. states are quietly imposing new fees on e-commerce and food delivery transactions, adding hidden costs to services like Amazon and DoorDash. Colorado levies $0.28 per delivery, while Minnesota applies a $0.50 charge on orders exceeding $100. Legislatures in New York, Hawaii, and Ohio are considering similar measures, with proposed fees reaching $0.75 per transaction.
These stealth taxes—projected to generate billions in revenue—represent just one facet of a broader trend. Airports now impose 'neighborhood fees' on concessions, and electronics purchases carry recycling surcharges. Since 2019, the number of government-imposed fees has surged from 400 to 1,400, with little consumer pushback enabling further expansion.
